Boxing Me In

After reading MSNBC, I started thinking about issues with "intelligent" technology. Though it might make some business processes easier, not everyone is on board with the idea completely. Predictive text on my Iphone has caused me more aggrevation than it's worth. Also, I"m not sure that I want the routes I take, the times I'm away from my house, and other personal information to be on a database somewhere.

People also need to be encouraged to think for themselves now more than ever. The "dumbing down" of society in the last couple of decades has reduced many to mindless sheep, who will do whatever their favorite news channel or website tells them to.

  1. Interesting thoughts. I feel like the more and more that technology takes over, the less we have to do as individuals. We are allowing our computers to think for us. Netflix knows which movies we like. iTunes knows what music we like. ESPN.com knows what sports we watch most, and Amazon knows the books that I like to read. Just like you said, I have sent more errant texts by allowing the computer to think for me. And it is awfully scary to know that someone might be able to search me on a database and based on trends that I leave on the Internet, know my personal schedule even better than I do.

  2. I agree with both of you on this topic also. While although at first glance these technologies being able to "know" what we want before we ever do may seem nice right when you look at them. They may cause us to stop thinking as much for ourselves as we should. This could lead to missing out on different things you may not normally do. It just seems scary that all this is stored somewhere where other people can find trends out about everyone. I enjoy having to think for myself and dont always want a computer telling me what i "want".
